What is a Christian Science Nurse?
Christian Science nurses provide skilled, physical nursing care for individuals relying on Christian Science treatment for healing. Sunrise Haven has provided Christian Science nursing care in the greater Seattle area for more than 75 years. Many testimonies of healing attest to the practical care and loving service our Christian Science nurses provide to patients.
Christian Science nurses are well grounded in Christian Science practice and actively employ prayer, wisdom, and compassion while caring for patients. They fully expect progress and healing.
Our Services

Inpatient care is an overnight stay that includes practical Christian Science nursing care. Christian Science nurses are professionally trained to provide skilled care tailored to meet the needs of each individual.
Christian Science Nursing Care includes, as needed:
24-hour care
Assistance with personal care
Help with mobility (getting up, walking, lifting, etc.)
Nourishing meals and food modifications, as needed
Providing for patients who are receiving care in bed
Cleansing and bandaging
Christian Science nurses do not diagnose, administer drugs or provide any sort of physical therapy or other medical treatment.
In addition, Christian Science nurses lovingly support patients’ individual study and prayer by reading aloud, as needed, the Bible, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and other Christian Science literature.

Sunrise Haven and its Christian Science nurses ensure a safe environment for patients. Appropriate activity, such as walks indoors and out; meals; entertainment, such as online events, lectures, hymns and movies in the Day Room are offered every day; and Sunday and Wednesday church services.

Assists those who need immediate attention, but who don’t require an overnight stay. Examples of care include:
Cleansing or bandaging
Constructing a sling
Demonstrating how to safely use crutches

In-patient respite care is offered for those who are usually cared for in their homes. Regular in-patient Christian Science nursing care rates apply. Please call for availability.

Sunrise offers rest and study opportunities for individuals desiring quiet time to study Christian Science. Our rooms are bright, airy and modern, and have private bathrooms. We also provide two free Rest and Study nights a year to Journal-listed Christian Science practitioners who’d like to stay with us for dedicated study time. Our Christian Science nurses are available to consult with you by telephone or email anytime, free of charge. They are happy to talk about your Christian Science nursing care needs, including but not limited to:
Preparing food for someone having difficulty eating
Helping someone who has fallen
Cleansing and bandaging wounds
We are always available for any questions you may have about providing in-home care through reliance on Christian Science healing. We can consult with you about care needs for yourself or loved ones; refer you to Christian Science visiting nurses; and rent nursing care equipment to you for home use.
If you are caring for a family member or friend, it could be helpful to call a Christian Science visiting nurse to come to the home to share and demonstrate helpful ideas on Christian Science nursing. Or, you might like a Christian Science nurse to stay for a period of time to provide in-home nursing care. In either case, you’ll find locally- and nationally-based Christian Science nurses (available 24/7) listed in The Christian Science Journal.
Sunrise Haven can also refer you to local Christian Science nurses who are not listed in the Journal.

The Christian Science nursing staff will assess the need and teach how to use the equipment safely. Please call 253-813-2096 to schedule an assessment.
Confidentiality
The confidentiality of all information concerning patients and other guests is of the utmost importance at Sunrise Haven. The ethical standards upheld by Christian Science nurses and all staff derive from the teachings of Christian Science, which maintain the confidential relationship between Christian Science nurse and patient as well as between Christian Science practitioner and patient.
Maintaining confidentiality is also a federal law known as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996). This law requires that all organizations, such as Sunrise Haven, protect the privacy of patients in a variety of ways. We adhere to the letter and spirit of this law. Upon admittance to Sunrise Haven, a patient will be asked to review and sign the document, “Sunrise Haven Patient Privacy Information/HIPAA Privacy Notice,” which describes how information regarding the services received at Sunrise Haven may be used and disclosed to others.
Interested in being admitted?
To be admitted to Sunrise Haven for Christian Science nursing care, a patient must:
Rely exclusively on the practice of Christian Science for healing
Work daily and actively with a Christian Science practitioner listed in The Christian Science Journal
Be free from the use of over-the-counter and/or prescribed medications, vitamins and dietary supplements
Designate someone as his/her representative while staying at Sunrise Haven

Training
TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN SCIENCE NURSE
Sunrise Haven offers complete and thorough training for Christian Science nurses based on the requirements stated in the Manual of the Mother Church: The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. Our training program prepares individuals to become listed in The Christian Science Journal.
Graduates of Sunrise Haven’s Christian Science nurses training program might become Christian Science nurses in a Christian Science nursing facility, at a summer camp or school, or work as private duty Christian Science nurses, providing care and oversight in the home.
